All ten levels share the same Principle-Based Design training, so the difference is depth, speed and artistry, not quality of care.

Stylist level questions
Every service is priced by level. The rates on our Services page are Foundation Stylist rates, each level up adds to them, and you see the exact price for your stylist when you book.
What is the J. Joseph Salon level system?
J. Joseph Salon stylists work in ten levels, from Apprentice to Level 8 / Visionary Director, grouped in three tiers: Foundation and Rising, Established, and Directors. Every service is priced by level, so you choose the experience and the price point that fit what you need.
Does a lower level mean lower quality?
No. Every stylist at J. Joseph Salon trains on the same Principle-Based Design system and works to the same standards, with the whole team behind every appointment. The difference between levels is years behind the chair, the range of work a stylist has mastered, and artistry. A Foundation stylist delivers a clean classic cut or a single process color; a Director is who you book for a transformation or an editorial look.
How much more does a higher level cost?
Our menu shows Foundation prices, and each level up adds a step. When you book online, every stylist is listed with their level and starting price. Curly haircuts and balayage with a Balayage Specialist carry their own price. The exact price for color is set at your complimentary consultation.
How do I choose the right level?
Start with what you want done. Foundation and Rising stylists are fully trained on our system and are where many guests begin with us: classic cuts, single process color, a first visit. Established stylists, Level 3 to Level 5, bring years behind the chair to balayage, corrective color, curly cuts and precision work. Directors, Level 6 to Level 8, are our most experienced artists, booked for transformations and editorial looks. What is a Foundation Stylist?
A stylist who has completed our Apprenticeship Program. New to JJS, not new to hair. Their rates are the starting prices you see across the site.
Why do prices change by level?
Each level reflects certified education completed, years behind the chair and guest demand. Higher levels are booked further out and command a higher rate for the same service.
How do stylists move up a level?
On their work, against written criteria, and on the demand for their time. Nobody waits for a chair to open. That is how a stylist builds a long career here, and why the stylist you love is still here next year.
Will my price change if my stylist is promoted?
When your stylist earns the next level, their services move to that level's price. Appointments already on the books keep the price they were booked at, new bookings from the promotion date are at the new level, and your stylist lets you know before it applies to you.
Can I see more than one stylist at J. Joseph Salon?
Yes, and many guests do: a cut with one stylist and color with another, or a different level for a special occasion. Everyone trains on the same system and your notes and formula stay in your profile, so tell the front desk what you need and they will set it up, at any of our locations.
Can I book an Apprentice?
Yes. Apprentices take model appointments at reduced rates while they train, always under the supervision of our educators. Ask the front desk about availability.
Is a consultation free?
Yes. Consultations are complimentary and give you an exact price for your service before you book.
