What is balayage?

Balayage is a hand painted highlight. Lightener is swept onto the surface of the hair in soft strokes, so the color graduates naturally from darker at the root to lighter through the ends. It gives dimension without a hard line, and it grows out softly, which is why most guests go longer between appointments.

What is the difference between balayage and highlights?

Highlights are placed in foils from the root and give a brighter, more uniform result that shows regrowth sooner. Balayage is painted by hand, leaves the root natural, and gives a softer, sunlit result with more time between visits. Many guests combine the two: a few foils around the face for brightness, balayage through the rest for depth.

How long does balayage take?

Plan on two to three hours for a partial balayage and three to four hours for a full balayage, including the toner and finish. Dark hair going noticeably lighter can take longer or more than one visit, and your stylist tells you that at the consultation.

How much does balayage cost at J. Joseph Salon?

Balayage starts at $119 for face framing, $135 for a partial, $146 for three quarter and $163 for a full balayage, at Foundation stylist pricing. Each level up adds to those rates, and the exact price for your stylist shows when you book online. Most balayage appointments finish with a toner or glaze, which is priced separately. A consultation is complimentary.

How often do I need to redo balayage?

Every ten to sixteen weeks for the balayage itself. A toner or glaze every six to eight weeks keeps the tone fresh in between.

Which stylist should I book for balayage?

Our Balayage Specialists are the stylists to book when balayage is the whole point of your visit. Lightening is their specialty and most of what they do, and their balayage is priced at our Specialist rate. Every stylist at J. Joseph Salon is trained on balayage as well: a soft, natural result or a refresh is a beautiful choice with a Foundation or Rising stylist. If you are not sure, book a complimentary consultation and we will match you.

Can I get balayage on dark hair?

Yes. Dark hair lifts in stages, so a soft caramel or honey balayage is often one visit and a bright blonde result may take two. Your stylist builds in a bond repair treatment when the hair needs it, and gives you the plan before any lightener goes on.
